With the January transfer window and the World Cup out of the way, the Premier League is again in full swing. Arsenal have surprised many by leading the league, making them favourites among many online betting sites. Nevertheless, despite a five-point lead, there is still a long way to go for this season’s Premier League title to be decided.
What are the betting odds for the Premier League winner?
At present, Manchester City and Arsenal are currently the favourites to win the first Premier League title. Will it be Arsenal’s first since title 2004, current holders Manchester City or one the other challengers?
- Manchester City 4/5
- Arsenal 11/10
- Manchester United 28/1
- Newcastle United 100/1
- Liverpool 1000/1
Arsenal
Can Arsenal win the Premier League? Having played half their league games, Arsenal is currently leading the English Premier League with 50 points. The “Gunners” have momentum on their side having won 16 of their 20 EPL games, with two defeats to their name.
While some of their rivals have leaned on the goals of one or two individuals, Arsenal’s goals have come from several key players including Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and more recently, Eddie Nketiah.
The North London club have surprised many, not only by being top of the league but also how they’ve achieved a 5-point leader. Nevertheless, with two games against Manchester City yet to come, and Arsenal’s participation in the UEFA Europa League set to resume in March, it’s safe to say this league title race has a long way to go.
Who are Arsenal’s Premier League title challengers?
Even though Arsenal have raced ahead as Premier League leaders, there are a number of clubs chasing them for the top spot. Amongst them are current Champions Manchester City, a revitalised Manchester United, and a thriving Newcastle United. While you can never write off Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Manchester City
Will Manchester City win the Premier League? For many, Manchester City were the pre-season favourites for the Premier League title. Having won the league four in the last five years, it’s easy to see why many backed Pep Guardiola’s side. The “Cityzens” began the season strongly, thanks to the blistering start of Erling Haaland.
While Haaland’s form hasn’t stuttered (he currently has 25 league goals), Manchester City’s considerably has. With three defeats and draws in the 20 games they have played so far, they’re trying to catch up with Arsenal. However, the two sides are yet to meet in the league, and with City recently defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup, they could have a psychological advantage going forward.
Furthermore, City’s squad depth is arguably stronger than the Gunners, which should be an advantage as City aim for Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League glory in the coming months.
Manchester United
Does Manchester United have a chance of winning the Premier League? The red side of Manchester didn’t have the strongest start to the season with defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion, and Brentford. Nevertheless, under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag, the “Red Devils” are now pushing for their first Premier League title in a decade.
Since the Premier League resumed after the FIFA World Cup in late December, United’s only defeat has been against league leaders Arsenal. Victories against Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, and Wolves, along with a run to the League Cup final, have seen Manchester United build up a wave of momentum. Goals from the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandez have helped the feel-good factor thrive throughout Old Trafford.
Nevertheless, the combinations of those early league defeats, participation in three cup competitions, and an 11-point gap behind themselves and Arsenal, United’s long wait for Premier League glory might continue for at least another season.
Newcastle United
Is it possible Newcastle United can become Premier League Champions? Considerably the surprise package of the season so far, Newcastle United have impressed many with their tight-knit brand of football. With the best defence in the league, having conceded just 11 goals, Eddie Howe’s “Toon Army” aren’t a team to be ignored, as they sit third in the table.
Although they have received plenty of investment over the past 12 months, many did not expect Newcastle to be part of the top four so soon. The exploits of goalkeeper Nick Pope and the performances of Miguel Almirón and Bruno Guimarães have seen the North-East club firmly make their mark in challenging the so-called “Big 6”.
While they’ve only lost once in the league, Newcastle have drawn 9 games so far, which could eventually affect any real league challenge they may have. Nevertheless, you doubt Newcastle fans aren’t going to grumble at the likelihood of European football next season. Whether that comes from success in the Premier League or victory over Manchester United in the League Cup Final.
Liverpool
Can Liverpool mount a Premier League challenge? Alongside the aforementioned Manchester City, Liverpool was one of the pre-season favourites for the Premier League. However, the first half of the 2022-2023 season hasn’t quite gone to plan for Jurgen Klopp’s men so far.
Defeats to the likes of Brighton, Forest, Brentford, and Manchester United, alongside frustrating draws to Crystal Palace, Everton, and Fulham have seen the Reds stumble to 9th in the league table. Having yet to win a league game in 2023, Liverpool are currently without several key players; Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, and Diogo Jota are among those injured.
However, in Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool has a manager who knows how to navigate this league. He will look towards a mix of reliable players such as Mohammed Salah, promising youngsters, and new arrival Cody Gakpo, to revive any potential Premier League challenge.
With an unfavourable Round of 16 UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid lined up, the Premier League could soon be the only competition the Reds only priority.
